Do you use a wire frame base, air dry or oven dry clay?
Im very curious as I want to make models and sculpts.

I have an old (2004 !!!) tutorial to be found here:
[link]
molding(process of taking a silicone negative) is a more delicate process. It pays off to plan the sculpture well in advance, both in form(there are things that cannot be cast in the sense of mold-able and cast-able) but also in finances. There are various versions of silicone for casting, I use a special Swiss brand that is extra durable (RTV something number). You can buy silicone at average craft stores, in US it comes in two color components or with an add on of a hardener (2-5%). YOu have to be very precise with the silicone, it can also leak quickly out of the mold. There are various versions of casting, there is the (IMO material wasting) version where you place your original halfway in clay then pour silicone over it and repeat the process and have a two side mold. I use the reverse option and a more silicone friendly (silicone costs hell) version by doing the mothermold first (mothermold is what holds the silicone form in place, as silicone is soft) and then place in the figure and pour in the silicone. [link]
There are also other versions online. If you do want to cast I highly recommend asking someone to show it to you or atleast supervise the process. There's a lot that can go wrong or jinx.it took me 3 castings to get a certain feel for it. hope this helps
You mentioned some things wont cast. Ears? Legs? claws? what in particular?
